I have now applied the base paint for the rest of the snow, I will build this up until it has the same resemblance of the snow I have painted in the bottom left.

Talk about a part of this painting giving me trouble! The bottom left of this of this painting has proved very challenging indeed but after much work and rework and endless layers of paint I think I have nailed it.

Now completed the tree on the far right and added more details in the background. The snow is the next real big testing part of this painting to get right. I want the snow to be reflecting the sun so it will have a yellow glow about it to make this a warm snowy picture. Overall Im very pleased so far, hoping this will turn out as one of my best paintings.

Bottom half of this painting is now well under way, its hard to see from this photo of the painting but I have now sketched in darker and more committed lines of the main points and details to assist me in completing.

Sorry to all the regular viewers of this part of my website that I have not posted on here for a while, this was due to a big craft fair I attended at Burghley house last week which required me to get ready lots stock, it however was a very successful show for myself so was well worth it- I was working on this piece while I was there and it was pleasing for me to see so many of you who have been following this painting in progress on this website there. Anyway as you can see the trees are now about complete and I now proceed to paint the bottom half of this painting.

Winter Hunter Painting (Stage 7) |
Posted on 10 Apr 2009 by James |
I have worked more on the sky since last stage and feel happy with it now . With the trees Ive been trying to add more depth of field to them which seems to be working well- however the whole process of painting these trees is taking me much longer than I first thought but I think the results will be worth it in the end!

Find above lastest stages, again Ive attached a close up so you see the fine detail Im adding to the trees. Since last stage I have had a problem with the sky on this this painting! This was due to a very small insect of some sort which managed to lodge it self in between the paper and artboard, this paper was protecting the sky while I painted the trees. Unfortunately the insect died and left a very nasty mark on the left hand side of the sky. As a result I have had to touch up part of the sky thus there is colour change in part of the sky. I may now come back to this sky a later stage.

These trees are coming on nice now - the main branches of two of them above are about done, I will soon add some thinner branches to really bring these two trees to life. Ive added a close up here as well so you see better the colours and the detail which Ive done all with a size 2 brush and a 0 brush.

Started to the work on some of the tree trucks here, thought its a good idea to step back and see at this stage if the colours are ok before I proceed further in building these trees.

Now with the mask off, you can see the bottom part of the art board is still nice and clean. As it now is not contaminated with any paint from the sky it will now make it easier for me to paint the bottom part. Next stage I will be starting to build up some trees which I will paint on top of the sky!

With the sky now complete, here you can see me pulling the mask off which was protecting the bottom half of the art board.

This is the 1st stage of my latest painting, which is going to be a snow scene. Here you can see the sky which is about complete which I have painted fully with the airbrush. I will build this painting up from back to front, as you see there is masking film on the bottom third of this painting this is protecting the white artboard underneath while the sky is being complete. Keep watching this space as I will be uploading more stages soon.
